Would you like to know more about biomedical devices and biomedical engineering? If so, you are encouraged to attend this informative session sponsored by Alpha Eta Mu Beta (AEMB), the National Biomedical Engineering Honor Society. We will have a panel of graduate students, faculty, and biomedical engineers describe a few representative devices, list some of their benefits, and explain what roles biomedical engineers play in their design, testing, manufacturing and use. After the series of brief presentations, you will have an opportunity to speak with the panelists and ask questions.

            PROGRAM SUMMARY

Biomedical engineering is a versatile profession that educates students to pursue diverse options post graduation. These options include jobs in industry, academia, as well as the pursuit of higher education in graduate or medical school. All of these options present the opportunity for an engineer to influence another person’s life. The positive outcome of such a responsibility is heavily dependent on how a student uses the core ethical principles that underlie the profession of bioengineering. How does one “hold the safety of the public above all else” when one also must balance the cost, risk or deadlines associated with a key project? Both expert technical and ethical knowledge must be taken into consideration in answering this question. This session is aimed to stimulate the minds of engineering students regarding the importance of ethics with an emphasis on current engineering practices. The presentation will provide students with a framework for identifying, analyzing and resolving ethical issues that occur in the workplace. Case studies and interactive discussions will be used. A summary report of this session will be disseminated through Alpha Eta Mu Beta, the National Biomedical Engineering Honor Society and BMES newsletters. This report will encourage AEMB members to develop bioengineering ethics sessions at their respective institutions and, to inculcate and encourage continued awareness towards the importance of ethics and Biomedical Engineering at their AEMB chapter meetings.
