CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Study of systems and organizational theories. Application to health care delivery and development of innovative models, including entrepreneurial practices.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Examine systems and organizational theories for their applicability to nursing leadership in organizational and entrepreneurial settings.
  2. Analyze political, social, and cultural factors that influence the dynamic, evolving nature of the health care system related to advanced practice nurses as change agents in systems.
  3. Examine interpersonal and task dimensions of leadership theories pertaining to creating change in health care systems.
  4. Discuss the influence of individual, group, and organizational dynamics related to creating communities and nursing systems.
  5. Develop approaches to overcome obstacles to nursing leadership in health care systems and entrepreneurial practices.
  6. Analyze the impact of present and proposed health care delivery models on the health of individuals, families, and communities.
  7. Examine factors that influence the principle of 'cura personalis' (care and respect for all individuals) related to creating/changing/leading health care systems.

Class attendance/active participation in small and large groups

Logs; Papers; Self evaluation: A documented self evaluation that will be graded on the accuracy of self appraisal; APA format (including being typed) is required for this course for assignments. If you do not own an APA manual it is strongly suggested that you purchase one. NOTE: The 1994 APA manual is available/$19.95. Grades may be affected by deficiencies in writing skills, grammar, punctuation, etc. Please contact University resources if help is needed in this area. Critical thinking and synthesis is expected to be demonstrated in all course requirements

INSTRUCTIONAL METHODOLOGY:

Seminar/Discussion; Experiential exercises: Small group activities; didactic; other methods as appropriate.
