The Incoherence of the Philosophers
Summer Seminar, Philosophy Department, Marquette University & Marmara University, Ilahyat
with other friends from the US and Turkey

Seminar Procedures: 

(1a) Starting on 1 June 2016 Nathaniel Taylor, a graduate student at Marquette, will prepare and send at least 1-2 days before the seminar a one-page list of key questions or key arguments and ideas based on al-Ghazali, Tahaful al-falasifa, Arabic text and English translation by Michael E. Marmura.  This student will lead the discussion on 1 June.
Let's all use this text of the Arabic and English so we are can better discuss the content.

(1b) On 8 June a student from Marmara Ilahiyat prepare and send at least 1-2 days before the seminar a one-page list of key questions or key arguments and ideas based on al-Ghazali, Tahaful al-falasifa.  This student will lead the discussion on 8 June.
We will continue this way alternating between Marquette and Marmara Ilahiyat each week.

(2) Starting with 1 June we ask that each participant submit one question on the readings for each seminar. Please send this question 2 days in advance of the seminar.

(3) We may be joined by students at the Divinity School (Ilahiyat School) of Süleyman Demirel Üniversitesi, Isparta, Turkey, or other students in the US or Turkey.

 (4) Please note the change of time for meetings that takes place on Tuesday 5 July. More information on this will be provided later.

7/13– We will be resuming our al-Ghazali Tahafut reading group this Wednesday July 13 at 8:00am Milwaukee time (16:00 Ankara time).
We will be covering three short discussions (5 & 6 will not be covered as a group):
7th Refutation of their statement: "the essence of the First is not divisible into genus and species" (7 pages)
8th Refutation of their statement: "the First is simple existent without quiddity".(4 pages)
9th Their inability to demonstrate that the First is not a body. (4 pages)

7/20 – 10th Discussing their materialist doctrine necessitates a denial of the maker. (3 pages) & 11th Their inability to show that the First knows others.  (6 pages) & 12th Their inability to show that the First knows Himself (3 pages)

7/27 - 13th Refuting that the First does not know the Particulars.(10 pages) & 14th Refuting their doctrine that states: "the heavens are an animal that moves on its own volition". (5 pages) & 15th Refuting what they say regarding the reason that the heavens move.(4 pages)

8/3 - 18th Refuting their statement that the human soul is a self-sustaining substance that is neither a body nor an accident. (17 pages)

8/10 - 16th Refuting their doctrine that the heavens are souls that know the particulars.(8 pages) & 19th Refuting their assertion of the impossibility of the annihilation of the human soul.(7 pages)

8/17 – 20th  Refuting their denial of bodily resurrection and the accompanying pleasures of Paradise or the pains of Hellfire.(18 pages)
