Electromagnetic Induction

Points to remember during lab.

1. Be both qualitative and quantitative when recording your observations.
2. Be as thorough, clear, and concise as you can when recording yourobservations. The following questions should be answered for each stepof the experiment:
   • Relative magnetude of induced Emf:How large is the induced emf? Does the voltage change during the process? What triggers the change in voltage?(There may be more than one factor working in tandem.)
   • Sign of induced Emf:Is the emf postive ornegative? In what direction does the induced current flow through the circuit?
   • Time duration of induced Emf:How long did theinduced emf last? How does this compare to the change of the source thatcaused the induction? (This is especially relevant when moving the magnet.) Isthere any time delay between the source change and the induction?

   • Channel A of the KIS interface will always be used to measure the emfinduced in the secondary solenoid. Channel B will be used to measure thepotential difference across different portions of the system for comparison tothe emf of the secondary.

   • The orientation of the solenoids is very important. Be sure to recordthe direction in which the coils of the solenoids are wound. This isespecially important when aligning the two solenoids in the mutual inductancesection of the experiment.
