The assigned readings are representative of different
periods of time and more importantly of different
historical, social, and philosophical formations and
perspectives (mentalities).
The Odyssey: The
Anthropocentric Mind
- How do the gods disclose Greek anthropocentrism? Cite
other significant examples of humanism in the epic.
- List important characters and gods.
- What is Homer's view toward women? Men? How does he
idealize them?
- How does this epic express Greek values?
Dante, Inferno: The Theocentric
Mind
Note: Use this reading strategy. Read the notes at the
end of each canto before beginning the poetry.
- What is Dante in search of?
- Who is Beatrice and how does she try to help him?
- List characters.
- Illustrate examples of symbolic retribution.
- How is this a scholastic work?
- How is it allegorical (i.e., are there hidden
meanings?)
- How is Dante pro-Roman and anti-Greek?
- How is Dante ambivalent toward Islamic culture?
- How does this work reflect European
theocentrism?
More, Utopia: The Renaissance Mind
- How does More's work reflect Christian humanism?
- What are his impressions of monarchy, the church, and
the aristocracy?
- Describe Utopia geographically? What country does it
resemble?
- Specify Utopian attitudes toward sickness, death,
gold, jewelry, and clothing.
- Characterize Utopian religion.
- Discuss gender relations in Utopia.
- Would you want to live in Utopia?
- Is Utopia a socialist/communist state?
- Do you think that More seriously viewed Utopia as a
viable social alternative?
MAP QUIZZES:
On each map quiz you will have 10 sites to find. You will
match numbers/letters to the information given. For example:
"Hammurabi's capital"; "Augustus ruled from there"; "Abbasid
capital"; "Muhammad's birthplace"; "Dante's native city";
"Abelard taught there"; etc. Occasionally, you will just
have to find a site (e.g., Black Sea, Euphrates River,
Córdoba). This packet includes maps to help you
prepare for the quizzes.
You will be given the sites to study for these quizzes in
lecture/discussion section.
