Professional Experience
Prior to receiving Ph.D.: 
    - 1964-65 Marquette University High School: teacher. Taught
        mathematics and Latin.
 
- 1965-66 Jesuit College, St. Bonifacius, MN: instructor.
        Taught general physics, developed and supervised
        introductory laboratory course.
 
- 1974-75 Marquette University physics department:
        lecturer. Taught general physics, developed and
        supervised advanced undergraduate laboratory course.
 
After receiving Ph.D. degree: 
    - 1975-82 Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI.: assistant
        professor. Taught general physics, atomic and nuclear
        physics, thermodynamics, developed and taught an analog
        and digital electronics course. Did research and
        published on the phase control of pulsed lasers and on
        x-ray spectroscopy. During this period, Dr. Matthys was
        director of the departmental graduate affairs committee
        and supervised the physics M.S. graduate program.
 
- 1982-84 Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI.: associate
        professor. Taught graduate courses on lasers and
        statistical mechanics. Studied image processing and
        automated data acquisition.
 
- 1984-85 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee: visiting
        associate professor. Did research on a variety of optical
        measurement problems with Dr. John Gilbert. Developed
        computer codes for controlling hardware and analyzing
        data from a variety of optical systems (holography,
        speckle, moire). Consultant to AT&T Bell Labs on the
        analysis of thermal deformations in microcircuit modules.
 
- 1985-89 Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI.: associate
        professor. In addition to his early interest in laser
        noise figures and the phase control of lasers, Dr.
        Matthys' current research is in holo-interferometry,
        speckle metrology, high-frequency moire, and the
        development of optical measurement systems incorporating
        fiber optics. He is also developing computer programs for
        image processing and automated data analysis. Particular
        areas of application are thermal/mechanical deformation
        of printed circuit boards, and the profiling of
        structural shapes. Dr. Matthys is continuing his work
        with researchers at AT&T Bell Labs on embedded
        speckle techniques, measuring deformations of optically
        generated fringe patterns, and the development of fiber
        optic sensing systems for remote displacement
        measurement.
 
- 1989-91 Marquette University: professor. Dr. Matthys
        began research on panoramic viewing systems and on full
        field fluid velocity measurements.
 
- 1991-92 Given joint appointment as Professor of
        Electrical Engineering at Marquette University. Elected
        to a one-year term as vice-chair of the Optical Methods
        Committee of the Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM)
        at the national meeting of SEM in June 1992. On
        sabbatical at the Illinois Institute of Technology,
        Chicago: Visiting Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace
        Engineering. Worked with Professor Sciamarella at IIT on
        projects involving ESPI and white light holography.
 
- 1993 Elected to two-year term as chair of the optical
        measurements division of the Society for Experimental
        Mechanics at the 1993 summer meeting in Dearborn, MI.
 
- 1994 Awarded NASA summer faculty fellowship to work at
        Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama on a project in
        binary optics.
 
- 1995 Awarded NASA summer faculty fellowship to work at
        Marshall Space Flight Center on image mapping transforms
        using diffractive optic elements.

Past: Phase-sensitive optical amplifiers.
Laser transients and coupling. Phase control of pulsed lasers.
Noise in laser systems. Interfacing analog sensors to computers.
Hybrid stress analysis combining experimental measurements with
finite element analysis. Finite element analysis of microcircuit
modules. Holographic interferometry and speckle metrology.
Characterization of buckling behavior in large structural
components. 
Present: Digital image processing of
optically generated fringe patterns. Experimental stress analysis
- developmental and applications oriented research in holographic
interferometry, speckle metrology, and high-frequency moire.
Holographic/fiber optic systems for deformation and vibration
measurement. Panoramic lens systems - A technique for inspecting
cavities and bores. Speckle Correlation methods for full field
velocity measurement. Fluorescence as monitor of chemical
changes. Diffractive or binary optics.
